Base64 Encode / Decode
Encode text to Base64 or decode Base64 back to text.
How to use the Base64 tool
- Choose Encode to turn text into Base64, or Decode to turn Base64 back into text.
- Type or paste into the left box. The result updates as you type.
- Tick URL-safe (Base64URL) when the output goes into a URL, a file name or a JWT.
- Use Swap to feed the output back in, and Copy to copy the result.
Example
Encoding Hello, tinydev! gives SGVsbG8sIHRpbnlkZXYh. Text is encoded as UTF-8 first, socafé ☕ becomes Y2Fmw6kg4piV and decodes back to exactly the same characters.
Frequently asked questions
What is Base64 used for?
Base64 represents binary data with 64 printable characters, so it can travel through text-only channels such as JSON, email attachments, HTTP headers and data: URLs.
What is URL-safe Base64?
Base64URL replaces + with - and / with _ and drops the= padding, so the result can sit in a URL or file name. JWTs use it. The decoder accepts both forms.
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or keys. Your text is processed in your browser and is never uploaded.
